諾曼貝茲因為在童年時期受到母親殘酷得近乎病態的管教，
加上內心對母親的亂倫慾及保護慾，最後他謀殺了母親和其情夫。

長大後諾曼貝茲在自家旅館中殺了女房客瑪麗恩，而被關進精神病院
。22年後加州政府根據醫生的診斷判定，讓他重回社會。他獲釋後返
回了山丘上的破舊旅館。

諾曼在當地一家餐館中找到新工作，擔任廚師的助手，因此認識了年輕的
女服務生，二人墜入情網。就在他即將拋棄過去重新做人，病將痊癒的
時候，諾曼卻在家裡的窗口，看見死去多年的母親…..
