The AX45-8XN is further proof that the SiS648 is a fine chipset - when it is correctly implemented. While I am still in early stages of evaluation, what I have seen so far is so positive I decided I needed to share:
1) DDR400 WORKS GREAT - straight out of the box. With 1 stick of Samsung DDR400, 2 sticks of Samsung, even 3 sticks - no problem. With 1 stick of Kingmax DDR400, 2 sticks of Kingmax, sorry I don't have 3 sticks. Will test Corsair XMS3200C2 this evening.
2) 1Mhz FSB settings from 100-250. Memory ratios of 4:3, 1:1, 3:4, 4:5, 2:3 AND a feedout IN BIOS of resulting Memory Speed. (At 133/533 FSB that translates to 100,133,177,166,200)
3) CPU voltage of 1.10 to 1.85V in 0.025V increments.
4) Full memory tweaking, inclusing Command Rate (1T, 2T, Auto)
5) PC Health status and Hardware Monitor
6) vDimm adjustment by jumper - but only 2.5V or 2.7V.
7) 6USB 2.0 AND 3 FIREWIRE AND on-board 10/100 LAN AND 6 PCI slots.
AOpen says the vDimm adjustment is useful for DDR400, but I found DDR400 ran just great with the default 2.5V - including the picky Kingmax. THIS BOARD RUNS DDR400 WITHOUT EXCEPTION SO FAR - it's the only one that handles it all so far other than the Gigabyte 8SR667.
I have OC'ed to 150 FSB so far, but have not been able to get higher. Will approach this more logically as testing proceeds. We may or may not be up against a SiS OC wall like on some other 648 implementations.
PLEASE NOTE: The shipping board is the A45-8XN and not the A45-8X MAX described on the website. It is not exactly like any of the web-site pictures. There are excellent aluminum passive heatsinks on BOTH the North and South Bridges. The board is all BLACK and the cables and adapters (3 Firewire and additional 2 USB) that come with the board are ALSO black. The black and silver looks really sharp. Yes, the 8XN DOES come with 3 firewire on-board.
I will be testing the unbuffered memory performance later, but it looks like AOpen waited to release this board until they got DDR400 fixed - or until a working 648 chipset revision.
Voltage is STABLE, STABLE, STABLE. All rails read just great on a quality 350W PS, and the 1.5V is 1.49V.
The AX45-8XN is only $95 from
www.myaopen.com ($7 Fedex Saver shipping) or $95 plus shipping from
www.mwave.com. It's a genuine value. I will do further testing to see if the performance with DDR400 is real, or if it has been achieved with lowered mem timings. Will report findings later.
(First tests show Buffered with Samsung SPD 2.5,4,4,1 at 133/533 2.26GHz of just over 3000. Unbuffered at same timings is mid to upper 1600's.)
