相傳，無著菩薩在印度南方的雞足山上觀修彌勒菩薩，數年過去，無任何證見之跡象，心生煩悶，就走出閉關，解悶散憂。路遇一老婦，用一塊棉布正在擦磨鐵棒，趨前相問，得知老婦是在磨鐵成針，見此情景，心中大受鼓舞，便立即返回山洞繼續修練。

三年之後，仍無一絲得證之相，又走出閉關山洞，看見附近，有一塊石頭，被山上滴落的水，打出一口洞，受此鼓舞，又返回山洞閉關修持……這樣，前後十二年光陰，依然沒有能夠證見到彌勒菩薩，在極度絕望之中，他又走出山洞，漫無目的地行走在山腳下時，看到一條下身腐爛，上身血跡斑斑的母狗，橫躺在他的去路上，這時，一種無限的慈憫，從他的心油然生起。他想用刀子把母狗身上的蛆虫一一挑出來，再割下自己身上的肉，去喂食那些蛆虫，把母狗救出來。

但，他又害怕堅硬的刀刃，會碰傷蛆虫嬌嫩的身軀。於是，他閉上眼睛，用自己的舌頭，去舔取那些小生命，當他睜開雙眼時，母狗不見了，看見的，卻是金光燦爛的彌勒菩薩。興奮之餘，無著菩薩埋怨彌勒菩薩道：「我觀修您多年，為何至今才現真身？」，彌勒菩薩答曰：「我從開始起，就在你眼前，但因業障蒙蔽，你沒有看到我。今天，你心生大慈悲，業因障礙頓時釋解，所以，你才看見我了”。
